What we will find when we head out to the gallops shortly......
There appears to be a harder ground frost than recently. Which is not great. But thankfully almost all of the snow melted through yesterday afternoon, so there will not be chunks of ice frozen into the woodchip. He writes hopefully....
At dusk last evening, the gallops were in perfect condition. We will learn in a moment how hard the overnight frost has been, and whether our plans will be tinkered with again. Always a little difficult to judge from down here on the "Bottom Yard". Always a few degrees warmer tucked down here in the village than the "Top Yard" up the hill....
And often a completely different temperature out on the gallops, where there is not much to get in the way of a bitingly cold wind.....
A bit of a "microclimate" down here in the Hampshire / Wiltshire Riviera. Will Wallis (Bountybeamadam) told me when we met on the school run yesterday that this is due to the Isle Of Wight protecting this little piece of England from the worst of the offshore winds. We do seem to get less snow here than twenty miles in each direction....
Which disappoints Tallulah in particular. When given the Isle Of Wight theory, she retorted, "Daddy, would it be possible to get the Isle Of Wight moved a bit....??" I will see what I can do, starting off with a letter to our local MP....
Billyrayvalentine, Sweet Ophelia, Nenge Mboko. All characters from that classic movie "Trading Places". And Racehorses here. A movie which I had not seen for many years. Until last night. Eddie Murphy. Dan Ackroyd. The gorgeous Jamie Lee Curtis. I thought I needed to see the movie again to acquaint myself with the characters around the yard. Room for more !! "Clarence Beeks", "Winthorpe", "My Harvard Tie", "Coleman the Butler".............
No runners this weekend. Apart from Barney, Tallulah and "Rubble" on several occasions. Half term. Which seems extraordinary. They only went back a month ago !!
Newbury gone by the wayside. A shame. A bit of rugby and football to keep us sporting nuts interested.......
